How no tax on tips works

  • Up to $25,000 a year of qualified tips is subtracted from your federal taxable income (2025-2028).
  • Income limit: the deduction drops by $100 for each $1,000 of income over $150,000 (single) or $300,000 (married filing jointly).
  • Federal income tax only. Social Security and Medicare still apply, and most states tax tips as usual.
  • Standard deduction users qualify. You don’t need to itemize.

Who qualifies?

The deduction covers voluntary tips in occupations that customarily and regularly received tips before 2025: wait staff, bartenders, hosts, barbers and hair stylists, nail technicians, massage therapists, personal trainers, delivery drivers, hotel and casino workers, and many gig-economy workers. Tips can be cash or charged to a card, and tips you receive through a tip pool count. Automatic gratuities and mandatory service charges do not. Tips also don’t qualify if you work in, or your employer operates, a “specified service” business such as health, law, accounting, consulting or financial services.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the no tax on tips deduction?

You can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips per year from federal taxable income for tax years 2025 through 2028. The deduction shrinks by $100 for every $1,000 of modified adjusted gross income above $150,000 ($300,000 for married couples filing jointly).

How much will no tax on tips save me?

The deduction saves your tax rate times your tips. A server earning $15 an hour for 35 hours a week plus $20,000 in tips saves about $2,376 in federal income tax, roughly $91 per bi-weekly paycheck.

Do I still pay Social Security and Medicare on tips?

Yes. The deduction only applies to federal income tax. Tips are still subject to the 7.65% Social Security and Medicare tax, and most states still tax them.

Which tips qualify?

Voluntary cash or card tips paid by customers, including tips received through tip sharing, in an occupation that customarily received tips before 2025 (such as servers, bartenders, hair stylists, delivery drivers, and many gig workers). Mandatory service charges added to a bill do not qualify.

Do I need to itemize to claim it?

No. The deduction is available whether you take the standard deduction or itemize. Married couples must file a joint return, and you need a valid Social Security number.

How do I get the savings in my paycheck instead of at tax time?

Give your employer a new 2026 Form W-4. The Step 4(b) Deductions Worksheet has a line for expected qualified tips, which lowers your federal withholding during the year. Otherwise, you receive the savings as part of your refund.
